What is the route from Cusco to Machu Picchu by train?
Most tourists travel to Machu Picchu by train, departing from the city of Cusco. This route is the fastest, safest, and most comfortable. The trip usually begins in Cusco with a road trip to Ollantaytambo. This town in the Sacred Valley is home to the station with the largest number of daily train departures to Machu Picchu. The train journey takes an average of 1 hour and 45 minutes. The last station is in the town of Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Town. From there, the last leg is a 30-minute bus ride through the mountainsides to reach the entrance gate to Machu Picchu. The total distance is 110 kilometers, on average. Visitors can complete this trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu in 4 hours. There are also other routes to the Inca citadel, such as the 4-day Inca Trail or the 6- or 7-hour alternative route via Hidroeléctrica (Amazon route). However, this train trip via Ollantaytambo is the most popular. The return trip follows the same route.
