The three new circuits in Machu Picchu
With the new entrances to Machu Picchu, three new circuits were also created within the archaeological site. Circuit 1 is called panoramic because it includes the visit to the sector of the Guardian’s House where you can get the best pictures of the Inca citadel. Circuit 2 is called classic because it offers the most classic (and recommended) tour of the Inca constructions and temples. Circuit 3 is called royalty because it offers a tour of Inca buildings of great importance for the Incas (such as the House of the Inca or the Temple of the Sun). Each type of ticket offers a tour of Machu Picchu in one of the three new circuits. Some tickets also offer a hike to an Inca mountain or construction.
Changes in the visit to Machu Picchu
There are three new circuits and ten new entrance tickets to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Since 2024, these new rules were implemented to protect the archaeological site from the large number of visitors per day. In this way, the new rules seek to protect Machu Picchu from possible collapse.
The most important changes in Machu Picchu are the new trekking routes and tickets to tourist attractions that were previously closed to the public, such as: the hike to Intipunku (the Sun Gate) or the hike to the Great Cavern (the Temple of the Moon). Both trekking routes can be done with the respective tickets: Machupicchu with Intipunku and Machupicchu with the Great Cavern.
In addition, tourist visits to tourist attractions such as the Huayna Picchu Mountains, Machu Picchu Mountain, Huchuy Picchu Mountain or the Machupicchu Inca Bridge were reorganized. For the visit to these Inca constructions there are differentiated tickets that include a tour of Machu Picchu through one of the three circuits available.
Circuit 1 is known as the panoramic circuit because it includes the visit to the sector of the Guardian’s House where you can get the best pictures of the Inca citadel. Circuit 2 is known as the classic circuit because it offers the most classic (and recommended) tour of the Inca constructions and temples. Circuit 3 is called the royal circuit because it offers a tour of Inca buildings of great importance for the Incas (such as the House of the Inca or the Temple of the Sun).
However, not all Machu Picchu tickets are available year-round. During the peak tourist season, from June 19th to November 2nd each year, four admission tickets are available: the Machu Picchu with Inca Bridge (Route 1D), the Machu Picchu with Huchuy Picchu (Route 3D), the Machu Picchu with Intipunku (Route 1C), and the Machu Picchu with Great Cave (Route 3C). These tickets are available year-round, but tourist visits are only available from June 19th to November 2nd.
Tourists can purchase tickets online or in person in the city of Cusco or in the town of Aguas Calientes. The online purchase can be made from anywhere in the world, so it is the most advisable to get availability. The purchase in Cusco is made in the authorized offices of the Ministry of Culture of Peru. However, if it is done a few days before, most likely there will be no availability. Then, the last option is to do it in the same town of Machu Picchu (called Aguas Calientes). There, according to new regulations, the purchase is made in person with one thousand tickets available. In practice, the safest thing to do is to find a ticket for the next day, which requires spending at least one night in a hotel in this town before making the final visit to Machu Picchu.
The rules aim to improve the quality of visits to Machu Picchu, but above all, to ensure the archaeological site’s good state of preservation for future generations.
