How to visit Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is the mountain on whose lap sits the Inca citadel built around the fifteenth century by orders of the Inca Pachacutec. There are two ways to visit it. The first is to visit the authorized offices in the city of Cusco. This way you run the risk of not being able to visit the places with more demand such as the Huayna Picchu mountain. The second is to make a reservation online. The latter is the safest and easiest way to get the Machu Picchu ticket.

Here are the advantages of booking online:

  • It is the easiest and fastest way. You can get the tickets without leaving home and in less than 24 hours.

  • It is the safest way to get the Machu Picchu ticket. If you do it once in the city of Cusco you may be surprised to find that there are no more tickets available.

  • There is no risk of losing the ticket because if this happens you only have to reprint the ticket or present it on a mobile device (Tablet, Smartphone) on the day of admission.

  • It is the safest way to plan your trip to Machu Picchu. By separating the day of your entrance you can book train tickets, airplane tickets, hotels, etc.

The Machu Picchu ticket is easy to get. You only have to make the corresponding reservation, make the payment (with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, or PayPal) and print the ticket. The process takes less than 24 hours on weekdays and 48 hours on weekends, so you don’t need to leave home!

Some tips before the trip

Machu Picchu is located at 2430 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). It is surrounded by a beautiful geography typical of the eastern part of the Andes mountain range. If you have already booked your Machu Picchu ticket in time, you should take into consideration other aspects related to the trip. Here are some tips:

  • Once you have booked your Machu Picchu ticket, do the same with the train tickets to the town of Aguas Calientes, the last stop before reaching the Wonder of the World.

  • The weather in Machu Picchu is warmer than in the city of Cusco. Bring warm, light clothing. A rain poncho is always recommended.

  • Reserve in advance the guide service or hire it at the entrance gate to Machu Picchu. Guides are mandatory in the Inca Citadel.

  • During the high tourist season (March to October) it is advisable to book hotels, tours, and other tourist services in advance.

  • Due to the altitude at which the city of Cusco is located (3399 m.a.s.l.), it is likely to suffer from altitude sickness. Do not be alarmed. A good acclimatization on the first day will be enough to make you feel better.

Advice from people who have been there

Machu Picchu

Ángela T.By: Ángela T.

“Majestic and impotent!“

“The place is wonderful, spectacular, and majestic. It seems that Machu Picchu is waiting for your visit. Being there is something incredible. I recommend staying one night before in Aguas Calientes so that the next day you don't have to get up early to go to the Sanctuary.“
