Machu Picchu: the schedules that everyone prefers

Machu Picchu is open to tourists every day of the year from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The entrance ticket allows access to the Inca city for a limited time of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, depending on the type of ticket purchased. Most visitors prefer the morning schedules, as they allow for a one-day visit and a return to Cusco in the afternoon and evening. Learn more about the times most visited by visitors!

Can I stay in Machu Picchu for the entire day?
Previously, there were no strict rules at Machu Picchu, and visitors could stay in the Inca citadel for several hours, even for the entire day. However, to protect the Inca city from the excessive number of visitors (approximately 1.5 million people each year), structured routes and, above all, schedules and time limits for visits were created. Thus, today there are 10 types of tickets and three circuits through the Inca archaeological site. Most people stay an average of 2 hours and 30 minutes at the Inca city. However, if you choose a ticket that includes hiking to one of the mountains, the time is 3, 4, or even 5 hours. Even then, there is no way for visitors to stay for the entire day (Machu Picchu is open from 6 am to 5 pm). The only possible way is to choose two or three entrance tickets at different times for the same day. In that case, it is best to visit on two different days. Machu Picchu will remain open!

Machu Picchu, tourist visiting hours

Machu Picchu is open every day of the year from 6 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon.

There are ten types of tickets in total, each allowing access to the Inca city at different times. All allow time to enjoy Machu Picchu on one of the three available circuits.

The visit time for tickets to Machu Picchu is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. However, if the ticket includes a hike to one of the mountains or to a remote Inca site, the time is longer.

For example, the Machu Picchu Classic Circuit ticket allows you to visit the Inca city in 2 hours and 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the Machu Picchu ticket with the Temple of the Moon allows for a 5-hour visit, including the hiking route to the Great Cave (as the Temple of the Moon is known).

The Machu Picchu entrance ticket shows an entry time, which must be respected. A delay of 30 minutes and 45 minutes is allowed during peak tourist season (June 19 to November 2). Late entry will be accepted in cases of emergencies such as train delays or problems accessing buses.

The recommended visit time is 2 hours and 30 minutes, and longer if you add a visit to the mountains or hike to Intipunku or the Inca Bridge. However, these times are indicative and ideal for your visit.

The times that most visitors prefer in Machu Picchu

  • For a 1-day visit to Machu Picchu from Cusco:

Visitors making a one-day visit departing and returning from Cusco prefer the 10, 11, and noon train times . This way, they have enough time to depart Cusco on the first trains (services from 5, 6, or 7 a.m.) and finally enter Machu Picchu at those times without any problems. It should be noted that, after visiting Machu Picchu, tourists must return by train to Cusco at 4, 5, or 6 p.m., or catch a later train.

  • For the 2-day visit to Machu Picchu with an overnight stay in Machu Picchu town (Aguas Calientes):

Tourists visiting Machu Picchu for at least two days, departing from the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), prefer the 6:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m., or 8:00 a.m. time slot. This allows them to enjoy beautiful sunrises over the Inca citadel, surrounded by a beautiful cloudscape and a still-soft sun. If tourists are staying another night in the town of Aguas Calientes, they can choose to visit at 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. During these times, there are fewer visitors to the archaeological site, which facilitates transit. Likewise, beautiful photographs can be taken in the dim light of the sunset.

Tips for choosing your visiting time in Machu Picchu

  • If you’re traveling on your own, decide whether you’ll visit Machu Picchu for 1 day or 2 or more days.
  • If you choose a day trip to Machu Picchu departing from Cusco, choose the 9, 10, or 11 a.m. departure time. This will give you time to explore the Inca city and return to Cusco that same afternoon.
  • If you choose a trip of two days or more, with an overnight stay in the town of Aguas Calientes, it’s best to visit Machu Picchu during the earliest hours: 6 am, 7 am, or 8 am.
