Inti Punku is a stone structure used as a center for sun worship , as the sun was the main deity of the Inca culture. Through the “Gate of the Sun” of Ollantaytambo, you can admire the surrounding valley, along with the mountains and the impressive Verónica snow-capped mountain, which adds a magical touch to our journey.

At sunrise, you can appreciate the sun setting through Inti Punku. It’s one of the most breathtaking moments you’ll ever experience. How to get to Inti Punku in Ollantaytambo?

The Inti Punku of Ollantaytambo is not included in tours of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, so you’ll have to venture out on your own, although the route is very recognizable. First, you’ll have to travel from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. The drive takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, passing through the landscapes of the Sacred Valley. After the trip, our hike will begin, departing from the town’s main square. We recommend doing this early in the morning to avoid the heat.

The walk to Inti Punku

  • Start of the walk

    The hike begins in Ollantaytambo’s plaza, from where we’ll head toward the Inca bridge, which is at the entrance to Ollantaytambo, before the rock climb.

    The first part of the route is easy, although there are some small climbs, as we will have to reach the top of one of the mountains surrounding Ollantaytambo.

    During the journey, we will be able to observe the entire territory of Ollantaytambo and its Inca buildings, as well as, during the first part of the hike, the Urubamba River, which will be our constant companion.

    The hike to Inti Punku in Ollantaytambo is 8.5 kilometers and covers an elevation gain of almost 1,200 meters, so we must be in good shape and have previously acclimatized to avoid altitude sickness.

  • The Cachiqata Quarries

    After completing more than half of the hike (6 kilometers), we will arrive at the Cachiqata stone quarries , the place where the ancient inhabitants of the Tahuantinsuyu empire collected materials for their impressive Inca constructions and temples.

    From this spot, we’ll see certain buildings and objects that were left half-finished. It’s an ideal place to take a break, as well as explore it to discover all its mysteries.

  • The Inti Punku

    From the Cachiqata quarries, the hike is a steady climb, although with just one kilometer left, we’ll be able to see the construction of Inti Punku, which will give us a second wind to reach it.

    During the journey, we will also see the Inti Punku campsite. Many people choose to spend the night here so they can watch the sunrise through the Sun Gate at dawn.

    The hike up takes 3 hours and 30 minutes , so we must be well prepared, with enough water and some snacks to give us energy during the journey.

  • Decline

    The return journey follows the same path we took to ascend, and thanks to the constant descent, the journey time can be exceeded by 3 hours.

    As we descend, we can observe another angle of the walk, along with all the flora that adorns the path.

    Upon arriving in Ollantaytambo, we can choose to spend the night in this incredible town or return to Cusco, since there are buses that go to the city at all hours of the day.
