New schedules to enter Huayna Picchu

The Huayna Picchu mountain is the most famous tourist attraction in Machu Picchu. It combines walking routes, Inca temples and beautiful landscapes. From January 1, 2024, the new schedules to enter to this popular mountain became effective.

Huayna Picchu: location, height and difficulty

Huayna Picchu is the mountain that gives shape to the Inca City of Machu Picchu. It has vertiginous Inca roads near ravines. Climbing to the top is an adventure considered one of the most incredible short walks in the world.

Location – It is located north of Machu Picchu. Its entrance door is in front of the Sacred Rock.

Height – Waynapicchu Mountain is 2,720 meters above sea level (masl), almost 300 meters above the Inca City of Machu Picchu.

Difficulty – Climbing to the top of the Waynapicchu has a moderate difficulty. It is recommended to ascend at an appropriate pace for each person.


How was the check-in time at Waynapicchu 2018?

The entrance schedule to Huayna Picchu in 2018 was in 2 different groups:

Group 1:

  • Entrance to Machu Picchu: from 6 am
  • Entrance to Huayna Picchu: from 7 am to 8 am
  • Permanence in Machu Picchu and Waynapicchu: from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m..

Group 2:

  • Entrance to Machu Picchu: from 6 am
  • Entrance to Huayna Picchu: from 10 am to 11 am
  • Permanence in Machu Picchu and Waynapicchu: from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m..

The entrance to Huayna Picchu in 2 groups is no longer valid. The new schedules establish the entry in 4 different schedules (Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4).


What is the new entry schedule for Huayna Picchu?

The new entrance schedule to Huayna Picchu from 2024 onwards is divided into 4 different groups:

Group 1:

  • Entrance to Machu Picchu: from 7 am
  • Entrance to Huayna Picchu: from 8 am to 9 am
  • Permanence in Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu: 6 hours from the entrance of the tourist.

Group 2:

  • Entrance to Machu Picchu: from 8 a.m.
  • Entrance to Huayna Picchu: from 9 am to 10 am
  • Permanence in Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu: 6 hours from the entrance of the tourist.

Group 3:

  • Entrance to Machu Picchu: from 9 a.m.
  • Entrance to Huayna Picchu: from 10 am to 11 am
  • Permanence in Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu: 6 hours from the entrance of the tourist.

Group 4:

  • Entrance to Machu Picchu: from 10 a.m.
  • Entrance to Huayna Picchu: from 11 am to 12 am
  • Permanence in Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu: 6 hours from the entrance of the tourist.

How long to stay in Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu?

  • The new 2024 schedules allow a maximum time of stay in Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu for 6 hours from the time of entry.
  • The visit to the Temple of the Moon (also called The Great Cavern) remains closed until further notice.
  • In any of the 3 income groups, they will not be able to visit the Huayna Picchu if they make their entrance to the mountain at the established time.

How to visit the Huayna Picchu?

  • The only way to visit the Waynapicchu mountain is to buy the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu entrance online.
  • Due to the high demand for tickets, it is recommended to book the ticket 3 or 4 months in advance.
  • At the time of ticket purchase, the visitor must choose one of the 4 schedule options (Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 or Group 4).

  • Like the Huayna Picchu, the incomes to Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain have new schedules since 2024.
  • It is worth noting that any of the entrances to Machu Picchu allows you to, free entry to the Machu Picchu Site Museum is allowed in the late shift: from 12 pm to 4 pm.
  • The visit to the Inca City of Machu Picchu is mandatory with a tour guide. In Waynapicchu, however, it is not obligatory to be accompanied by a guide.
  • Entrance to Huayna Picchu is only allowed to visitors over 12 years old.
  • Due to the steep roads, older adults in poor physical condition are not recommended to climb the Waynapicchu.
