The Inca city of Machu Picchu

The Inca city of Machu Picchu is the end of the Inca Trail. The entrance is through the Intipunku (Sun Gate), just as the Incas did hundreds of years ago.

The Inca Trail offers several campsites. However, the most popular option (preferred by tourists) is: Ayapata Camp (first night), Chaquicocha Camp (day 2), and Wiñayhuayna Camp (day 3). If this last campsite is unavailable, the campsite can be changed to Phuyupatamarca Camp (day 3). Campsite selection depends on availability. It is recommended to book the tour in advance. Itinerary

The all-inclusive Inca Trail tour begins with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. From there, we'll travel by transport to the starting point of the trek. From there, we'll hike 39.6 kilometers through soaring mountains and tropical landscapes. We'll camp three times until arriving at Machu Picchu on the morning of day 4. Campsites vary based on availability. After touring the Inca city, we'll return to Cusco by train and bus.

1The adventure begins

  • Pickup in Cusco. We'll board a vehicle that will take us to the Inca Trail starting point, near the town of Ollantaytambo.
  • Once ready, we'll set off for Machu Picchu. We'll climb 13 kilometers uphill, from where we'll see the Llactapata archaeological site.
  • At the scheduled time, the cooks will have the delicious lunch ready.
  • We will continue the hike until we finally arrive at the Ayapata camp where we will have dinner and sleep.

2Road to the top

  • We will wake up very early to enjoy breakfast before starting the hike.
  • That day we will walk 11 kilometers in total through high Andean landscapes such as the 'Abra Warmiwañusca' (at 4,215 meters above sea level).
  • Then we will continue descending until we arrive at the Pacaymayu camp where we will have lunch.
  • After recharging our batteries, we'll arrive at the Chaquicocha camp. There, our cooks and porters will be waiting for us with dinner served and our tents ready for the night.

3Discovering incredible landscapes

  • That day, the journey won't be as arduous. We'll get up very early to have breakfast and get ready for the hike, which will be mostly downhill.
  • In the morning, we will visit the Sayacmarca archaeological site. We will then arrive at the Wiñayhuayna camp where we will have lunch.
  • We'll then rest in our already-prepared tents. In the afternoon, we'll visit the Wiñayhuayna archaeological site. That day, we'll hike approximately 10 kilometers.

4Getting to know Machu Picchu

  • That morning we will wake up very early to have breakfast and complete the hike (only 3 kilometers) that will take us to Machu Picchu.
  • 2. After seeing Machu Picchu from the Intipunku (the Sun Gate), we tour the Inca citadel on a panoramic tour with our tour guide.
  • After visiting Machu Picchu, we will descend by bus to the town of Aguas Calientes.
  • There we will have the afternoon free for lunch or shopping.

5Return to Cusco

  • In the afternoon of day 4 we will return to the city of Cusco in the following way: with a first bus trip from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes
  • Then with a tourist train ride from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo.
  • And finally with a final minivan trip from Ollantaytambo to the city of Cusco.
  • We'll be there around 7 p.m. All transportation is included in the tour. Visitors can upgrade from the Expedition to the Vistadome train if they wish.

The 4-day Inca Trail tour operates with an average of 8 to 10 tourists and a maximum of 15. For groups larger than 9, an assistant tour guide will accompany the group. The tour includes tea time each afternoon, as well as boiled water so tourists can fill their bottles.

Accessories included and not included in the tour

The trip to Machu Picchu includes meals, porters, cooks, camping equipment, entrance to Machu Picchu, and return on the Expedition train. Hiking supplies are also included. Find out which ones are included and which are not.

Trekking pole (not included in tour)

Hiking poles are not included in the tour. These tools are important for the downhill sections. It's recommended to bring at least one. You can rent one at the reserve for $10.

Sleeping bag (not included in the tour)

Sleeping bags are not included in the tour. This item is required and must be carried by the tourist during the hike (the porter does not carry it). You can rent one at the reserve for $25.

Thin mattress (yes included in the tour)

The tour includes a thin Zebra brand sleeping mat (5 centimeters thick) placed between the ground and the tourist's sleeping bag. The mat is carried by the porter. For extra comfort, an additional one can be rented for $25.

Camping tent (yes included in the tour)

Tents are essential and included in the tour. They are transported by porters. The tents are Eureka brand two-person tents (sleeps 4). If you're looking for more comfort, you can rent a personal tent for $40.

Additional porter for tourists (not included in the tour)

Porters are responsible for carrying cooking and camping utensils (they do not carry the tourists' luggage). They are included in the tour. If you're looking for more comfort, you can rent a personal porter (to carry your luggage up to 12 kilos) for $198.

Vegetarian food (yes included upon request)

The tour includes full meals provided by chefs. The meals are prepared with Andean products. They are healthy and delicious. Tourists with vegetarian or vegan preferences can request a meal plan according to their preferences by email.


Available train services

The 4-day Inca Trail tour does not require an outbound train. However, the return trip includes travel on the Expedition train. This tour service is recommended for its comfort and safety. The entry option to Huayna Picchu and its difference with Machu Picchu

The tour includes a visit to Machu Picchu via a panoramic route, but first we'll arrive via Inti Punku, from where we have beautiful views of the citadel. Circuit 1 allows us to tour the upper part of the Inca citadel. The tour is short and its objective is primarily to appreciate the sights. Optionally, for an extra cost, you can add a tour of Circuit 3 of Machu Picchu, offering a more detailed view of the main temples, as well as an ascent of the famous Huayna Picchu mountain. Ticket Machu Picchu Circuit 3 (optional)

The Machu Picchu Circuit 3 entrance ticket allows you to take a complete tour of most of the main structures of the Inca citadel. This tour can be added to the final day of the Inca Trail (additional cost). The journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Important information

The only way to hike the Inca Trail is by booking a tour through an authorized travel agency. In February, the trail is closed due to constant rain. A maximum of 16 tourists per group is allowed.

    Yes. It has become customary on the Inca Trail to tip the team on day 3. However, it is not mandatory. The amount depends on the quality of service provided by the guides, cooks, and porters.

  • 2) Are the camps fixed?

    No. Campsites may vary depending on the options chosen when booking the tour. It's recommended to purchase the tour six or seven months in advance. This way, you'll be able to book the most recommended campsites (the Wiñayhuayna campsite on the last day is the most recommended).

  • 3) Does the tour include travel insurance?

    No. Travel insurance is a service that tourists are responsible for. It's recommended to obtain it before hiking the Inca Trail.

  • 4) When is the best time to hike the Inca Trail?

    The best time to hike the Inca Trail is during the dry season (April through October). Remember that the Inca Trail is not permitted in February due to the constant rains.

    Bathrooms are basic and located at each campsite. Additionally, the All-Inclusive Service offers a chemical toilet at the campsites (for the group only). Basic showers (cold water) are located at the first campsite in Ayapata and the last campsite in Wiñayhuayna. The tour also includes hot water tubs for basic personal hygiene.

  • 8) What archaeological sites can I see during the Inca Trail?

    The archaeological sites that you can see during the route are: Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñayhuayna. To appreciate them all, you must reserve the Wiñayhuayna camp on the last day. To do this, it is necessary to buy the tour in advance of 4 or 5 months.
