The Sacred Valley of the Incas

  • The importance of the Sacred Valley was noted since the time of the Incas, as the fertility of these lands made the Tahuantinsuyo Empire much more prosperous. The presence of the Urubamba River throughout the territory was also a key factor.
  • That is why many of the most important Inca constructions and citadels are located in this territory, including: Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Pisac, and Moray.
  • During your tour of the Sacred Valley, you can see many Inca foundations that lie beneath colonial constructions. It is a territory rich in history, where the syncretism experienced is part of the culture.
  • Although there are many recognized citadels in the Sacred Valley, there are also small structures you can visit throughout the territory, such as: Ñaupa Iglesia, Huchuy Qosqo, Pinkuylluna, Inti Punku, and many others.
  • Today, these archaeological sites are among the main tourist attractions in Peru and the world. You can explore each town that preserves a piece of Inca history, or you can also book the Sacred Valley tours.

It is a tour experience that can be done in just one day, although we recommend experiencing it with a guided tour, which also includes transportation, guidance, and lunch.

  • According to Cusco historian Víctor Angles Vargas, this archaeological center is equidistant from the city of Cusco and the Piquillaqta site. Due to its location high above Pisac (3,300 meters above sea level), the citadel did not suffer much damage and remains in good condition today.

  • The Huchuy Qosqo Archaeological Site (Little Cusco) is located 47 kilometers from the city of Cusco. It is believed to have been a resting place for Inca Viracocha and his family.
  • Due to the greater age of its constructions compared to other sites, few buildings remain well preserved. Notable features include terraces and buildings up to three stories high, some made of stone and others of adobe.
  • Because of the layout of its walls, which resemble the city of Cusco, it is called ‘Little Cusco’. The ancient site had a Kallanka, a rectangular building up to 70 meters long that housed Inca nobility.

Advice from people who have been there

Sacred Valley

Rafael H.By: Rafael H.

“An extraordinary place“

“A trip to the Sacred Valley must include visiting Pisac and Ollantaytambo. It is truly breathtaking. The Inca ruins allow you to understand the greatness of this empire, which was so mistreated by the conquerors. It is also recommended to visit Chinchero and buy alpaca wool products at very affordable prices.“
