The magical town of Aguas Calientes

The fourth night of the Salkantay trek we visit the town of Aguas Calientes. Its name is due to the natural thermal baths located in the upper part of the town. However, this place is also called Machu Picchu town due to its proximity to the Inca citadel. There visitors will spend a night in a tourist hotel. They can also walk through its tourist streets and, optionally, they can visit its thermal baths. It is a special place!


How is the itinerary?

The tour begins with the pick up of the tourist at the door of your hotel in Cusco, then travel by tourist transport to Soraypampa, the starting point of the hike. The first day you will walk to the Humantay lagoon and spend the night in a comfortable camp. From the second day on, you descend through tropical trails. On the third day you arrive at the famous Hydroelectric station. On the fourth day you visit Aguas Calientes (with the option to visit the thermal baths). The last day is dedicated to Machu Picchu and the return.

Cusco - Soraypampa

Soraypampa - Humantay Lagoon

1 Cusco – Humantay Lagoon - Soraypampa

  • The tour begins with pickup between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m. from your hotel in Cusco.
  • We'll take a tourist bus to the village of Mollepata, where the hike begins. We'll visit the Tres Cruces area (lunch) with views of the Limatambo Valley. Then we'll continue on to Markokasa and Choquekiclla.
  • From this point, we'll have privileged views of the Salkantay snow-capped mountain and the Humantay lagoon. We'll then arrive in Soraypampa, where, after dinner, we'll spend the night in a cozy campsite.

2 Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Collpampa

  • From Soraypampa, after a nutritious breakfast, we'll hike to the Salkantay Pass (4,650 meters above sea level). From there, we'll enjoy unforgettable views of the Andes Mountains.
  • After a short break, we'll descend to the Huayrac camp, where a nutritious and delicious lunch will be waiting for us to recharge our batteries.
  • We'll then continue down the mountain, following the Salkantay River. We'll pass through the village of Challhuaypampa and stop at the Collpampa camp (at 2,900 meters above sea level).
  • After dinner, we'll spend the night at our campsite. Starry skies will accompany us every night, providing a spectacular view of the mountains.

3 Collpampa – La Playa – Santa Teresa

  • The third day will begin early with a refreshing coca tea. We'll then enjoy a nutritious breakfast and get ready to continue our hike.
  • The journey begins at the Collpampa campsite and ends at the Playa campsite in the Cusco jungle, a place filled with green mountains that completely change the landscape.
  • Once at La Playa campsite, located in the Santa Teresa district, we enjoyed lunch. For the remainder of the afternoon, tourists can optionally visit the Cocalmayo hot springs, go ziplining, rest, or do any other activity of their choice.
  • Afterward, we'll settle into the comfortable campsites at La Playa. There, after dinner, we'll spend the night surrounded by a warm landscape, located 1,550 meters above sea level.

4 Santa Teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes

  • The fourth day's adventure begins with a nutritious breakfast, followed by a strenuous hike uphill to the Inca archaeological site of Llactapata.
  • We will then descend until we arrive at the Hidroeléctrica train station, where we will have lunch in a tourist restaurant.
  • From Hidroeléctrica, we'll embark on a classic short route that will take us to the town of Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Town, due to its proximity to the Inca city.
  • Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes, we'll head to the hotel where we'll spend the night to drop off our things and get ready for dinner. We'll also have the option to relax in the town's hot springs (not included in the tour). We're now close to Machu Picchu!

5 Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

  • On the last day, we'll wake up very early to enjoy a nutritious breakfast at the resort hotel.
  • We'll then board the Consettur bus, which will take us to Machu Picchu in just 30 minutes (optional free 2-hour hike). This route offers incredible mountain scenery. It's the perfect prelude to a visit to Machu Picchu!
  • Upon arrival at Machu Picchu, we'll have an informative and panoramic tour with our tour guide. We'll have plenty of time to explore the main buildings and learn more about Inca culture.
  • The return from Machu Picchu to the town of Aguas Calientes will also be made on Consettur buses (walking available if you want a more adventurous ride).
  • Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, tourists will have free time for lunch and to learn more about this magical town (if you booked the special lunch at the Tinkuy restaurant, you will have lunch next to the Machu Picchu archaeological site).
  • In Aguas Calientes, at the time indicated by the guide, tourists must board the train that will take them to the town of Ollantaytambo.
  • Finally, in Ollantaytambo, you'll board a tourist transport that will take you to the city of Cusco, where the tour concludes in the evening.
