The tour itinerary

The tour begins with pickup in Cusco. You'll then travel by bus and train to the starting point of the trek. Itinerary

The 2-day Inca Trail is not as demanding as the Classic Inca Trail (4 days). It begins with pickup from your hotel. After a bus and train ride, you'll arrive at the checkpoint where you'll visit the Chachabamba archaeological site. You'll then continue your ascent to visit the Wiñayhuayna archaeological complex. Finally, you'll arrive at Machu Picchu for a panoramic tour. A detailed tour of Machu Picchu is planned for the second day.

  • Pickup takes place at approximately 4 a.m. from your hotel door, after which we will transfer by bus to the Ollantaytambo train station in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
  • In Ollantaytambo, we'll board the Expedition train, traveling through beautiful landscapes until we reach kilometer 104 of the railway, the starting point of the short Inca Trail. There, we'll register and get ready to begin the 2-day Inca Trail.
  • First, we will visit the Chachabamba archaeological complex and then Wiñayhuayna, where we will stop to eat our box lunch.
  • After that, we'll begin the final stretch to reach Inti Punku (Sun Gate), from where we'll admire Machu Picchu. After a short walk, we'll arrive at the citadel to take photos with Machu Picchu.
  • Day one ends with a descent to Aguas Calientes, dinner at a tourist restaurant, and a rest stop at a hotel in the town.

2Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

  • Day two begins with breakfast at our hotel in Aguas Calientes.
  • We'll then walk to the bus station for the short 30-minute ride to the entrance gate to Machu Picchu. During this route, we'll enjoy the beautiful mountainous landscapes filled with vegetation that are a foretaste of Machu Picchu.
  • For approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, we'll explore Machu Picchu with our tour guide. It's recommended to take a postcard photo on the first day. The tour of the citadel will allow us to learn more about the main temples and buildings of Machu Picchu.
  • Finally, we will return to Aguas Calientes. In the town, we will have free time for lunch (not included in the tour) and to do some last-minute shopping before returning to Cusco.
  • We will return to Cusco with a train ride to Ollantaytambo (Expedition or Vistadome train) and then by bus to the city of Cusco, where our 2-day Inca Trail experience ends.

Important information

The only way to hike the Inca Trail is by booking a tour through an authorized travel agency. In February, the trail is closed due to constant rain. It's open the rest of the year. The symptoms of altitude sickness are reduced by spending a few days in Cusco beforehand. Learn more!

No porter needed

Unlike the Classic Inca Trail, the Short Inca Trail does not require porters to carry luggage. Tourists must carry a backpack with a basic weight.

Inca Trail closure in February

Both the Classic Inca Trail (4 days) and the Short Inca Trail (2 days) close in February for conservation work. The rest of the year, everything remains open to tourists.

How to combat altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness can be a problem during the tour. It's recommended to acclimatize to Cusco's climate at least one or two days beforehand. This will reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness.
